Through their painting, sculpture, installation, video, and graphic and interior design practice, collaborative team Thukral & Tagra pose probing questions about capitalist incursions, social mobility, and consumerist desires. Their impeccable compositions convey both Surrealist as well as Pop sensibilities, preserve the sparkle of modern advertising, and embody a kitschy, and thus satirical, gleam. Coursing furiously beneath their dreamscapes that interlock the urban with the domestic is a solemn vigilance for the implications and repercussions of their nation’s aspirations, and by extension the heavy price of modernization on the entire civilized world. The duo has presented solo exhibitions in India, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, and China. The artists have been invited to participate in group shows held at institutions such as the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, France; the Helsinki Art Museum Tennis Place, Finland; the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Spain; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, China; the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea; and the Essl Museum in Vienna, Austria. Thukral & Tagra have also completed high-profile commissions for Pepsi, United Colors of Benetton, and Nokia.
