“Distinctive Resonance” is a large series ranging from intimate works on paper, to sculptural objects, to epic history-style paintings, each comprising portraits of individuals, past and present, whose time in this world was sacrificial and heroic, and whose lives have made indelible imprints on human history. In preparation, Titus Kaphar studies his subjects’ beliefs, philosophies, theologies, and life stories in painstaking detail. What results are not conventional portraits—the artist constructs pieces that describe his personal reaction and express a commemorative reverence to the words and deeds of these legendary figures, among them: Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, W.E.B. Du Bois, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Aung San Suu Kyi, Oscar Romero, Dorothy Stang and Muhammad Ali.
